Rebooting the past, one byte at a time.
This site is a fresh start for my old blog, a place where I’ll be sharing my various projects in retro computing and homebrew software development. It’s a journey that started as a young kid on a farm, typing in programs from books I found at the public library.
I believe that understanding the past is key to building the future. Here, I’m exploring the intersection of classic hardware and modern development practices. My projects range from reverse engineering hardware to creating new software, with a recent focus on the Atari 7800. I’m excited to get back to writing games, this time specifically targeting the 7800 with some much-needed RPGs.
To start off with, I quickly found that the retro developer community did not have a good “front end” for the various command line tools. Sure there is the Atari Dev Studio plugin for VS Code but that was not what I wanted. Enter devCMDcycle.py, a tool I built to simplify my own workflow for compiling, adding headers, and running ROMs. Join me as I explore these classic systems and create new experiences for them.
Before a new world can be written in the language of light and logic, one must first forge the assembler. For the soul of any grand creation is not in its final, complex form, but in the elegant, elemental tool that first taught the machine how to dream.
